I love South Florida, but twice a year I am lured away to a sleepy town in North Carolina called High Point. It’s a city that certainly does sleep at night, yet High Point comes vibrantly alive every spring and fall during the International Home Furnishings Market. Paris, Milan, New York – forget it. When it comes to furniture and design, the High Point Market is the biggest and the best. The Robb & Stucky team just returned from High Point and I’m excited to share a sneak peek of what’s new, what’s hot and what’s next. Fasten your seatbelts.

RADIANT ORCHID GOES RAD – Early this year, Pantone proclaimed Radiant Orchid as THE color of 2014. Well, here we are just a few months later and it’s already changing. Radiant Orchid’s been radicalized. First, shades of gray continue to be a huge design influence, both in fabrics and finishes. Gray is having its day with Radiant Orchid with not-so-subtle shifts to lavender and lilac. On the other side of the spectrum, red, the color of power, is exerting influence, nudging the purples to fuchsias.

HAPPILY SINGING THE BLUES – I wouldn’t dream of usurping Pantone as the color arbiter, but I think we may be headed for a blue period. It was in the Carolina blue sky at Market, as well as painted wood finishes and throughout the comfy world of upholstery. Like all colors, blue has a wonderful range of tonality from baby blue to periwinkle to violet. Some of the most intriguing showrooms layered various hues of blue in one monochromatic yet diverse palette.

FOR THE LOVE OF LUCITE – Let’s be totally transparent. Lucite is synonymous with Mid-Century Modern design and it was clearly a hit at the High Point Market. Think Lucite legs on sofas and chairs, Lucite hardware on drawer fronts and Lucite lamps. Here at Robb & Stucky, we trend spotted Lucite months ago and have some wonderful items at the Fort Myers store right now. One example, the Pluto Lamp from the inimitable Mr. Brown.

ALL THAT SHIMMERS – Happy days are here again! As the country returns to more prosperous times, glamour is back, reflected (quite literally) in precious metals and mirrors of all variety. Silver and nickel are still a big deal. Mercerized glass is mesmerizing. Gold finishes can be dulled down or polished to a sheen. Move over wood: mirrored drawer and door fronts are gorgeous and reflect high style. More good news. At Robb & Stucky, dolled-up glamour needn’t be over-the-top expensive. Our buyers source beautiful objects for every budget.

Are you hungry for more trends and inspiration? Consider this a personal invitation from me and Robb and Stucky to attend a free decorating seminar Wednesday, April 30th at 11 a.m. exclusively at our Fort Myers store. I’m eager to share more and there’s lots of time slotted for Q&A. Call 239-415-2800 to reserve your place today. Let’s start designing!
